Description

A shrewd letter from Gable’s starlet wife about the financial success of “They Knew What They Wanted”

American actress (1908–1942) and wife of Clark Gable who enjoyed great success as a popular screen comedienne in the 1930s; she tragically passed away in an airplane crash when returning from a war bond rally. TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.25, personal letterhead, November 4, 1940. Letter to Danny Winkler at RKO Pictures. In full: “Will you kindly authorize your accounting department to forward to me each week, if possible, a statement of the proceeds from my last picture They Knew What They Wanted and on all pictures in the future. I should like them to show on each statement not only the weekly proceeds but the totals to date.” In fine condition, with punch and staple holes to top, a horizontal mailing fold through tops of a few letters of signature. Lombard’s dramatic roles were much less successful than her comedic parts, and as this letter indicates, she followed the financial results of her films—the proceeds were important to Lombard because her contract stipulated that she was to receive a percentage of the profits. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
