Description

“All culture has come about as a by-product of religion”

TLS, one page on a self-contained Air Mail Letter, 7.75 x 9.25, Faber and Faber Ltd. letterhead, August 2, 1962. Letter to Dr. Alan R. Lichter in response to the question of whether affiliation with an organized religion is a positive or negative factor in the development of a mature intellect, in full: “I wish that questions could be framed in such a way that I could understand them, and think of an answer. Your questions of July 9th leaves [sic] me very much in the dark. I believe that it is best that every human being should belong to a church, and, to put it in very simple terms, I like Christians to go to church and Jews to go to the synagogue. I think that the proper religious life is life in community, and I think that all culture has come about as a by-product of religion. But I could not answer either ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ because I find it unintelligible.” Eliot has also made three corrections and added a phrase to the final sentence in his own hand. Intersecting mailing folds (not affecting signature), scattered light creasing, discoloration from postmark on reverse, and expected tears along edges from opening, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
