Description

The thoughtful author reflects on the “relation between temperament & religion”

ALS, one page both sides, 8.5 x 10.75, July 21, 1962. Letter to Mr. Lichter, in response to a previous question, in part: “I suspect that the answer to your question is: ‘It depends on the constitutional & temperamental make-up of the individual.’ Some people are happiest and most productive within a framework of organized thought and organized social and religious relationships. Others are happiest & most productive when outside of such a framework. The relation between temperament & religion is clearly stated in the Bhagavad-Gita. There are those to whom it is natural to follow the way of works, those for whom it is natural to follow the way of devotion & ritual, and those for whom it is natural to follow the way of contemplation. And of course there are some people so constituted that they can follow more than one of the ways, or all three of them.” In fine condition, with trivial scattered creasing and light show-through from writing on opposite sides. Beginning in 1939, Huxley developed a close tie to the Vedanta Society of Southern California, learning meditation and spiritual practices from Swami Prabhavananda. He wrote an introduction to the Bhagavad Gita in 1944, and contributed dozens of articles to Vedanta and the West, published by the Society. An interesting letter written from his home in Los Angeles, touching on his deep interest in Eastern religion and the individual. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
