The president and future Confederate president appoint an engineer in the army

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 14 x 18, August 14, 1854. President Pierce appoints William P. Graighill a “Brevet Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers in the service to the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Pierce and countersigned by Jefferson Davis. Document is affixed to an identical size mount. In very good condition, with previous intersecting folds, a bit of light soiling, Davis’s signature fairly light, but still legible, and tape to edges. The white seal is slightly worn, but intact. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
