“For what avail the plough or sail, or land, or life, if freedom fail?”

AQS on an off-white 5.25 x 3 sheet, signed “R. W. Emerson,” dated February 10, 1864. Emerson pens a line from his poem ‘Boston.’ In full: “For what avail the plough or sail, / Or land, or life, if freedom fail?” Matted and framed with a period engraving of the author to an overall size of 9.25 x 15.75. Reverse of frame bears an affixed label from Goodspeed’s of Boston. In fine condition, with light edge toning. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
