Description

“I don’t write very good letters till I up get drunk about some jane myself”

Huge ALS, one page, 12 x 17.75, March 18, 1954. The page bears a painting of a red and black figure, no doubt done by Guthrie before the letter was written. Letter to Hank Sloane. In full (with grammar and spelling retained): “Thanks to that girl that caused you to get drunk enuff to write me such a fine letter as you did. I don’t write very good letters till I up get drunk about some jane myself.” Under his signature, Guthrie adds, “We got us a good longshore strike hitting old NY town.” Intersecting folds, paper loss to two corner tips and edges, two old pieces of tape at top, and a bit of light toning, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed by Guthrie, and signed on the reverse, “Woodie Guthrie, 517 East 5 St., N. Y. City.” Provenance: Bonham’s, 2004. An amazing offering, complete with an original artwork, and spectacular content of real-life experiences, which formed the basis for many of his classic folk songs. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
