Description

Philip H. Sheridan

Union general (1831–1888) whose cavalry command blocked Lee’s escape at Appomattox. ALS signed “P. H. Sheridan, Maj Genl,” three pages on two sheets, 5.25 x 8.25, Headquarters Department of the Missouri letterhead, October 29, 1868. Letter to Henry Smythe. In full: “Knowing how much interest you feel in the exploits of Captain Merryman both by land & sea, I send you an illustration of the effect his presence on the plains had upon the buffalo. With my kind regards to yourself and family.” The first page is matted and framed (so both sides may be viewed) to an overall size of 10 x 13. This frame attaches by two hooks at the top to a larger 25.75 x 23 frame which houses the final page of the letter. The letter is cloth-matted along with a portrait of Sheridan and a small plaque. In fine condition, with central horizontal and vertical folds and some light show-through from writing on reverse. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
