Politician (1808–1873) who served as secretary of the treasury for the first three years of Abraham Lincoln's term, after which Lincoln appointed him chief justice of the Supreme Court. In that role Chase presided over the 1868 impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson. LS signed “S. P. Chase,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, October 9, 1861. Letter to Brig. General J. W. Phelps. In full: “The Secretary of the Treasury has no authority to interfere in cases as that submitted in your memorandum of the 3d inst. The memorandum will, however, be referred to the Secretary of War for his consideration.” In fine condition, with a slightly trimmed right edge and letter affixed to an identical size sheet.
