Description

Incredibly rare program from a 1941 benefit concert starring Einstein on violin

Rare program for a violin performance by Einstein on January 24, 1941, 5.25 x 8, two pages, signed at the bottom in green ink. The set list consists of Mozart’s ‘Sonata No. 4,’ as well as ‘An Old Indian Song’ and ‘Russian Dance’ by Frida S. Bucky. Einstein was to be accompanied by Gaby Casadesus on the piano. In very good condition, with multiple horizontal folds, scattered creases, and some light soiling.

Along with piano lessons from his mother, Einstein began taking violin lessons at the age of six, fostering a lifelong passion for music; he treasured his instruments as enduring companions, and often remarked that if he were not a scientist, he would have been a musician. Later in life, his fame as a physicist and philanthropist often led to invitations to perform at benefit concerts, which he often eagerly accepted. This scarce program is from one such event at the Present Day Club in Princeton, organized to raise funds for the American Friends Service Committee for Refugee Children in England. An uncommon and delightful piece highlighting the Nobel-winner’s favorite pastime. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
