Description

Extremely rare, the first Abigail Fillmore item we have ever offered

Wife of Millard Fillmore (1798–1853) and First Lady of the United States from 1850–1853. Ultra rare ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 6.5, black-bordered letterhead, no date. Letter to Mrs. Carroll. In full: “I intended to have made you an offer of our carriage to drive out whenever you felt disposed, but I had so many things to occupy my mind I neglected it—Mr. Carroll has been sick, and you have been confined by his sick bed, and riding may benefit you both. And I beg you will send for our carriage whenever you desire. It will be a favor to us if you will do so, or the horses might suffer for want of exercise. We have only arrived this morning being a little sick from the voyage have seen no acquaintances today. I wish yourself husband and daughter were here—but whether here or there, I hope to meet you in good health, and also to find Mr. Carroll perfectly restored.” In fine condition, with a spot of light toning over a portion of the first line of text. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
