TLS signed “Harry,” one page, 8 x 10.25, Office of the Vice President letterhead, April 11, 1945. Letter to Henry Chiles. In part: “I will be glad to do what I can for George G. Hall. I don’t know how far we can get with it, but we will try. You certainly ought to be proud of those boys. They have certainly been right for the country.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.The letter was written to Truman's close friend, from Independence, Missouri, Henry P. Chiles. Truman references Chiles's sons, who were deeply involved in World War 2. However, what makes this letter extraordinary is the date: April 11, 1945. This was the day before FDR died, which would propel Truman into the presidency. This letter represents Truman's last full day as vice president. Interestingly, in an interview given to the Truman Library, Chiles stated that he received this letter by the time Truman had become president.
