TLS signed “W. S. Rosecrans,” one onionskin page, 8 x 10, Treasury Department letterhead, October 11, 1888. Letter to Captain Hunter. In part: “Murat Halstead advised Gen. Boynton to have a little book made out of those letters, by adding them to something that would be suitable and germane. I told Gen. B—I thought favorably of that.” Underneath, Rosecrans adds a lengthy handwritten postscript, which reads, “Gen. Boynton has been seen, and it is agreed that it is best to print another 1000; Will send some for Loyal Legion and members of the Army of the Cumberland who call for them, leaving it to your discretion as to how to dispose of same.
