Description

The ‘Birdman of Alcatraz’ cures a blind bird and petitions for freedom

ALS signed “Bob, Robert Stroud, #594,” one lightly-lined page both sides, 8 x 10.25, Alcatraz, June 1, 1947. In part: “American article says: ‘Interesting developments are coming to a head in the Stroud case. If you have a petition send it in to Mr. Marcus at once.’ So that is all I know. From what I was told last spring, there should be some real news the last of this month…No matter what anyone says about me, there is always someone in every group of breeds everywhere who knows me personally, whose birds I have at sometime or other saved…Did I tell you about the blind bird of Octavia Hudson’s. She has been bringing her bird trouble to me since 1930, when she saw an article I wrote for a poultry journal—she does not take the bird journals. Well, when this bird went blind, she started writing…She finally got me a letter through Mark. The bird has then been blind in both eyes for a year. Last September I told her what to do (sulfa) and by January one of the eyes had lost its grayness and become light sensitive…the bird can now see enough out of one eye to make his perches and both eyes are light sensitive. I am still working on my brief for the Circuit Court. It is quite a job as I have to make seven copies…I may take the matter to the Congress. I think that it is about time that some persons learned what the Bill of Rights really means, and I may use my writing ability to teach them.” Stroud also signed at the top of the front page, in the ‘from’ address area. In fine condition, with light intersecting folds and a small area of toning to the lower right corner. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA. While at Alcatraz, Stroud had access to the prison library, where he studying law and began petitioning the government that his long sentence amounted to ‘cruel and unusual punishment,’ in violation of his 8th Amendment rights. An interesting letter full of great content, offering insight into Stroud’s immense knowledge of birds and his own court case. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
