Description

“Together with Man Ray, when I was young, Georges Lynes gave me to understand that the ‘objectif’ of a photographer ought to be called the ‘subjectif’”

Partial ALS in French, one page, 8.25 x 10.5, no date. Conclusion of a longer letter to an unknown recipient. In part (translated): “Together with Man Ray, when I was young, Georges Lynes gave me to understand that the ‘objectif’ [lens] of a photographer ought to be called the ‘subjectif.’ Georges, in spite of his Roman-bust head, was a Cyclops. His real eye projected from his stomach, and the world was misshaped and reshaped through it. I visualize him eternally leaning against the opening of a ladder through which this eye has ‘fixed’ my youth, once and forever. And his death restores it to us is the only reality that counts; that in which nothing can grow old and which nothing can die.” In fine condition, with central horizontal and vertical folds and a diagonal crease passing through a small portion of signature. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
