Description

Houdini interjects himself in a match between the ‘Manassa Mauler’ and the ‘Ghetto Wizard’

Vintage 8.75 x 7 photo of Houdini refereeing a fake boxing match between Jack Dempsey and Benny Leonard in front of a large crown including armed soldiers, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Harry Stone from Houdini Aug 12/20.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 14.25 x 12.5. In very good condition, with scattered creases, a couple touching beginning of signature, and mild silvering to darker areas of image and background. Although the history surrounding the event where the photo was taken is unknown, all three did know each other. At the beginning of World War I, Houdini found himself shut out of the European market. He threw himself into the war effort, selling war bonds and teaching American soldiers how to free themselves from German restraints. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
