Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744–1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as ‘gerrymandering.’ Partly-printed DS, signed “E. Gerry,” one page, 9 x 14.5, August 26, 1811. Document calling a special election in the town of Waltham, Massachusetts “for one Representative…to represent them in the Congress of the United States of America, in the room of the Hon. Joseph B. Varnum, who has vacated his seat in the House of Representatives by accepting a seat in the Senate of the United States.” Signed in the left border by Gerry, and signed at the conclusion by the secretary of the commonwealth. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered toning, and light mirroring of text from folding. The white wafer seal is toned, but intact.
