ALS signed “George Harrison, xxx,” one onionskin page, 6.75 x 6.75, Hotel George V letterhead, no date. Letter to an admirer, written in early 1964. In full: “Thanks for your letter—Paul isn’t getting married.” In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds passing through the signature and moderate scattered creases. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from noted Beatles expert Frank Caiazzo, and a certificate of authenticity from Tracks.
Rumors of marriage swirled around the Beatles from the start, and were always of great concern to the droves of their young female fans. At the time of this letter, Paul was dating Jane Asher, who he had met at Royal Albert Hall in 1963. There were constant rumors of an impending marriage, but it never happened—the couple became engaged, but Asher broke it off in 1968 due to McCartney’s womanizing tendencies. This letter was also most likely written around the time of the Beatles’ famous introduction to the US on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, during which a caption appeared under Lennon that read, “Sorry girls, he’s married.” Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RR Auction COA.
