Description

Robert Anderson

Union general (1805–1871). Anderson commanded the three United States forts: Castle Pinckney, Fort Moultrie, and Fort Sumter, in the face of South Carolina’s imminent secession. Anderson refused a formal demand for his surrender and in the early morning hours of April 12, 1861, Fort Sumter was bombarded, and the Civil War began. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo, by Fratelli Vianellil of Florence, signed and inscribed in black ink “For Mrs. Longworth Powers, with the kind regards of Robert Anderson, Major Gen. U. S. A., Florence, June 19, 1871.” Date line of signature over printed photographer’s information, a few trivial spots to image, and some mild toning to reverse, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
