Description

Speaker of the House Polk looks westward

ALS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, March 29, 1837. A letter to Hon. Gideon Poe requesting a favor for a constituent. In full: “I beg leave to introduce to your acquaintance Mr. Timothy Kezer of Nashville Tennessee. Mr. Kezer is a man of industrious business habits, and is a reputable and worthy citizen. His object in visiting your city is to engage in business with persons of capital who may desire to make such investments, in procuring and giving them information, of the most valuable lands now in market, in the Western States. This letter is to enable him to make acquaintances with capitalists, if any there be, who may desire to engage his services, and to whom he can explain his own objects and uses. He is already, I believe, favourably known to a number of gentlemen in your city. You will confer a favor by aiding him in the furtherance of his wishes.” Reverse of second integral page bears an address panel in Polk’s hand. Intersecting folds, scattered creases and toning, some light creasing to the signature area, and a couple erased pencil notations to the left corners, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a 9 x 14 folder with an engraving of Polk affixed. Even as a congressman, Polk desired to aid in western expansion. This letter foreshadows what was to come during his presidency, during which the United States annexed Texas and acquired most of its current Southwest in the Mexican-American War. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
