Mathis of Austin, Texas, in part: “While I would like nothing better than to be of assistance to your son, and I deeply sympathize with his desire to serve overseas and in a commissioned capacity, there is very little that a Congressman can do in a matter of this kind. The Army and Navy feel their efficient operation depends on placing personnel where vacancies occur and where men are needed most at a particular time. I shall be more than glad to contact the Adjutant General in behalf of your son, but I feel I should tell you that such action is sometimes more harmful than helpful to the boy. Under the circumstances, if you feel there is anything I can do, I will appreciate hearing from you further, and of course will take any action you suggest,” adding a brief, handwritten note below, “Jimmie—I’m mighty afraid to intervene but will do anything you say—I just don’t want to hurt our boy.” In fine condition, with scattered creasing. A desirable letter, featuring crisply-penned, concerned sentiments from Johnson while the nation’s military forces were being battered in the invasion of Italy.
