Description

Taft presents a portrait to an important member of the House Territories Committee as “a souvenir of the passage of the Statehood bill”

Vintage matte-finish 6.5 x 9.5 Harris and Ewing photo, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen “For my friend Congressman Guernsey with regard and best wishes and as a souvenir of the passage of the Statehood bill, Wm. H. Taft.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 10.75 x 14.25. In fine condition, with the word “Statehood” having been abraded, but still partially legible, and signature a bit cramped. Frank Guernsey (1866–1927) represented Maine in the House of Representatives from 1908 to 1917. He served as a member of the House Territories Committee and one of the five members of the subcommittee that drafted the New Mexico and Arizona statehood resolution. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
