Description

Shortly before the Confederate surrender, New York lawyer Arthur cashes a check

Bank check, 6.75 x 2.5, filled out and signed by Arthur, “C. A. Arthur,” payable to Bearer for $20.00, February 3, 1865. Arthur has also initialed the affixed two-cent revenue stamp, “C.A.A. Feb 1865.” Cancellation cut above signature, several vertical creases, a couple lightly passing through signature, blue pencil cancellation, light toning and wrinkling, and another bank stamp to reverse, otherwise very good condition. In 1864, Arthur and Thomas Murphy, a hatter who sold goods to the Union Army, raised funds for Lincoln’s reelection from Republicans in New York and attended Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration on March 4, 1865, a month after this check was signed. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
