AQS, signed “Mark Twain,” on a 4.75 x 3 off-white card. Clemens pens a quote from the opening of A Double Barrelled Detective Story. In full: “We ought never to do wrong when people are looking. Truly yours, Mark Twain 08.” Card is stitched in to a slightly larger purple postcard, with the address of a woman in Cairo, Egypt, written on the reverse in an unknown hand. In fine condition, with a light diagonal bend to lower right corner. Twain’s short story, A Double Barrelled Detective Story, is a parody of the classic 19th century mystery, and introduces the reader to Sherlock Holmes in an unusual manner.
