This clipped document bears the ink signature “John Hancock,” in his bold and distinctive script. The piece is countersigned "John Avery" as Secretary, who served under Hancock's tenure as the first governor of Massachusetts beginning in 1780. The piece measures 7.25 x 2.5 and is affixed to an 11 x 7.5 black sheet. Some vertical folds, a few wrinkles and uniform toning, otherwise fine condition. These minor faults do not detract from the clarity of Hancock's signature. John Hancock holds the distinction of being the very first signer of the Declaration of Independence. He served as President of the Continental Congress from 1775-1777. The importance of his autograph is reflected in the fact that "place your John Hancock" has become synonymous with "signature" in the US. Accompanied by a copy of an historic Hancock color portrait.
