His poetry and dramatic works provided source material for Beethoven, Schubert, and Berlioz, among others. Rare and desirable autograph quotation on a 6.75 x 2.5 off-white trimmed slip. Goethe writes four lines, in German, loosely translated: “Illustrious beggars I’ve known, Artists and philosophers called; But I know nobody…The better paid his bill.” In fine condition, with a central vertical fold and a bit of trivial toning.
