Description

Lewis Carroll presents a young girl with an “Easter Greeting to every child who loves Alice”

Four-page leaflet, 3.5 x 5.25, entitled “An Easter Greeting to Every Child Who Loves Alice,” circa 1876. Signed and inscribed on the front cover in purple ink, “Edith from Lewis Carroll, Sep 11, 1877.” In fine condition, with a few light creases, and a light vertical bend affecting just a single letter of inscription and sentiment.

This item was initially designed to be inserted into the specially bound presentation copies of The Hunting of the Snark, though individual copies were made available to Dodgson to present to his young friends. The original recipient of this particular item was Edith Blakemore, whom the author met in July 1877 while he was on vacation. Dodgson took a sincere liking to the young girl, and continued a friendly correspondence with her for nearly 20 years. An uncommon ‘Lewis Carroll’ item to find signed with a wonderful connection to his most famous character—Alice. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
