Description

McCartney finds his way home to Capitol Records

DS signed “P. McCartney,” fourteen pages, 8.5 x 11, October 13, 1985. A manufacturing agreement with Capitol Records covering records, tapes, CDs, and other media. Though the document refers to “16 pages,” the missing last two pages appear to have been nonessential riders or appendices. Expected file and staple holes, a few notations, and light handling wear, otherwise fine condition.

This 1985 document marks McCartney’s return to the label that laid the foundation for The Beatles’ legacy. In 1978, McCartney made his famed break from Capitol Records, opting to join forces with Columbia Records for the 1979 Paul McCartney & Wings last studio release, ‘Back To The Egg.’ His relationship with Capitol Records was lengthy and controversial; when The Beatles were first presented to Capitol Records in the early 1960s by EMI Records, the label exercised their first rights of refusal and famously rejected the Liverpool boys. When Capitol exercised their option again in November of 1963, this time in favor of The Beatles, they cemented their monumental role in ushering in the Beatlemania whirlwind of 1964. In 1968, after a few years of screaming success, The Beatles formed Apple Records, providing a creative outlet for themselves and a handful of other artists. All of the major label competition, including Capitol Records themselves, assumed that Capitol would automatically be granted distribution rights; in the end, Capitol found themselves fighting for those rights alongside all the other majors, eventually winning the distribution race and enabling The Beatles to run their own label. This contract brings McCartney full circle and back into the arms of the label that provided the platform for one of the greatest musical frenzies of all time.
