Description

Wells and Fargo sign an 1861 American Express stock certificate

Businessmen Henry Wells (1805–1878) and William Fargo (1818–1881) founded the American Express Company in 1850 and the Wells Fargo Company in 1851. By capitalizing on the burgeoning need for express and banking services, both men (and their companies) came to number among the greatest success stories in the commercial development of the American West—and, indeed, became still-familiar household names. DS, one page, 11.75 x 8, March 11, 1861. A handsomely engraved certificate for five shares of capital stock in the American Express Company, issued to Alexander Holland, signed “Henry Wells” as President and “Wm. G. Fargo” as Secretary. In very good condition, with mild toning, a couple small separations along several vertical storage folds, light wrinkling, and a trimmed left edge. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
