Description

Lincoln summons the author of Lane’s Resolution to the White House

War-dated ANS as president signed “A. Lincoln,” on a 3 x 1.75 off-white card, to Indiana Senator Henry S. Lane. In full: “Will Senator H. S. Lane please call and see me at once. A. Lincoln, December 12, 1864.” Card is affixed to a 5.5 x 4 off-white card and is in very good condition, with uniform toning, with some slightly heavier soiling around text and signature.

Eight days after meeting with President Lincoln, Lane—a rabid proponent of retaliation during the Civil War—introduced legislation that became known as Lane’s Resolution. As reports of inhumane conditions in Confederate prison camps spread through the Union press, many Northerners began viewing such treatment as a deliberate policy, and prompted Lane’s legislation. The resolution, however, essentially mirrored what was being enacted by the Rebels and promoting behavior that violated not only the laws of war but also federal legislation. An important Civil War-era meeting between the president and a man who had been a staunch supporter at the 1860 Republican National Convention, feverishly rallying the Indiana delegation to throw their support behind the nominee from neighboring Illinois. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
