Description

Churchill is reminded of “former days and an amusing anecdote” by the woman who watched him when he was seven years old

TLS signed “W. S. Churchill,” one page, trimmed to a size of 7 x 8, Chartwell letterhead, November 3, 1946. Letter to Mrs. Angus, with the salutation written in Churchill’s hand, “Dear Madame.” In full: “ Thank you so much for your letter of October 28, recalling memories of former days and an amusing anecdote. It was most kind of you to write to me.” Letter is affixed to an identical size board. In very good condition, with trimming as noted, central horizontal and vertical mailing folds, a few small edge tears, and scattered toning. Accompanied by Angus’s typewritten letter to Churchill, which reads, in part: “It was a great satisfaction to many who listened to the appreciation given you at the Albert Hall Victory celebration lately. To me particularly, as I once had charge of you when you were about seven, and I was eleven. ‘Keep him out of mischief—if you can–’Miss Frances Thompson said. ‘My sisters, Miss Kate and Miss Charlotte have brought him up from Brighton, and as you are the last boarder left here, I want you to keep an eye on him while I talk to them.’ You are not likely to remember this, and you were certainly not aware of my indignation at having a small boy foisted on me–a big girl – for several hours. Even then you had the gift of words and your favourite adjective was t’riffic [sic]–everything was terrific.” Lighthearted association with an exceptionally large signature. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
