Description

Unique collection of acceptance and regret letters for the World Trade Fair including two from LBJ: “I do not think it would be proper for me to communicate with other governments”

Collection of ten TLSs, all responding to David J. Jacobson and New York City Mayor Robert F Wagner concerning attending opening ceremonies for the Fifth Annual World Trade Fair in New York City, held at the New York Coliseum May 3-13, 1961. All but one of the letters is dated from 1961. Letters are from: two from Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, one declining the invitation, and the second is in response to a follow-up letter to Johnson. Second letter reads, in part: “I do not think it would be proper for me to communicate with other governments. This is basically the fiction of the President of the United States and I only communicate with other governments at his direction…As for opening the Fair, even though I personally beleieve that this is a worthwhile project, it is far too early for me to make a decision on an event what will not take place until next year.” Other letters are from Dag Hammarskjold (decline); Earl Warren, “Our Court is hearing arguments the week of May 1st, and it would be impossible for me to make the trip to New York at that time.”; Hubert Humphrey, signed “H. H. Humphrey,” (declining); Edward R. Murrow, “I will not be able to attend the formal opening ceremonies…as I expect to depart early that morning on a field trip to…the Middle East.”; Abraham Ribicoff, signed “Abe” (declining); Dean Rusk (declining), William S. B. Lacey, and Visutr Arthayukti (accepting). In fine overall condition, with office pencil notations to the tops of some of the letters, staple holes to top left corner of some of the letters, some light toning, and a couple of office stamps. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
