Description

Napoleon’s empress asks a favor for a woman taking “an interest in my sad affair”

Empress of France, born Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763–1814). Married Napoleon in 1796 and divorced in 1810, unable to produce an heir. ALS in French, signed “Josephine,” one page, 4 x 6, no date. Letter to an unknown recipient. In full, “The personal interest which I have in Madame De Pauge, Monsieur Councillor of State, causes me to recommend to you her concern (business affair); you would greatly oblige me if you could help her as quickly as possible. Accept I pray you, the assurance of my esteem.” The remaining text is in the hand of either the Councillor of State or a representative: “I have the honor of presenting to you the letter which Her Majesty the Empress has required me to present to you. You see, Monsieur, how much she condescends to take an interest in my sad affair. I hope that her recommendation will have the effect which she would wish for me.” In fine condition, with partial red ring to text of letter, probably from a stamp placed on the transmittal envelope and a horizontal fold. A scarce offering from one of history’s most intriguing women. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
