Description

Parlophone Records card inscribed to the girls responsible for the famously photographed heart pillow in 1963

Vintage 5.75 x 3.5 Parlophone Records promotional photo card issued in 1963, signed and inscribed on the reverse in ballpoint “To Kathleen, love from the Beatles. Thanks, a lot, a nice bit of knitting. George Harrison xxx,” “Paul McCartney (’Thank you girl(s)!’),” “Ringo Starr xxx,” and “Ta Luvs, John Lennon XXX.” In very good to fine condition, with scattered creases and surface marks, expected trivial mild soiling, two small squares of archival paper residue on the image side, and Lennon’s signature and sentiment rather light but readable.

Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from noted Beatles expert Frank Caiazzo, and a letter of authenticity from the original owner that reads in part, “This is to confirm that the Beatles Parlophone promotional card signed on the reverse by all four Beatles…was autographed for me personally by the group in Liverpool in 1963 as a thank you in response to a heart-shaped present given to them by myself and two of my friends.” Accompanying as well is an unsigned photo of the band holding the aforementioned gift and a Topps trading card that used that image.

This photo, inscribed to one of the girls responsible for the heart, was acquired at The Beatles’ triumphant return to the Empire Theater in Liverpool on March 24, 1963, just two days after the release of their debut album, Please Please Me. McCartney’s inscription, “(‘Thank you girl(s)!’),” was a cute dual-meaning reference to the first single from the album, released just weeks before to critical acclaim from their rabid hometown fans. The direct correlation between these signatures and the famed photo of the Fab Four holding the embroidered heart is paramount; this widely-traveled image made its way onto a 1964 Topps trading card, making this heart perhaps one of the most famed pieces of fan-art the boys from Liverpool ever received. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RR Auction COA.
