Description

“Here I am pestering you again,” writes Wagner during a transitional 1857

Important German composer (1813–1883) who, by expanding harmonic, instrumental, and dramatic forces to a previously undreamed-of degree, single-handedly revolutionized opera and attained status as one of the most influential geniuses in the history of music. ALS in German, signed “Rich. Wagner,” one page, 4 x 5, July 3, 1857. Letter written to “Dearest friend!” In full (translated): “Here I am pestering you again, and this time with the request to accord the enclosed note to the said Philippi, if possible, whether he may be in Frankfurt or elsewhere. And herewith once more the assurance that I am cordially looking forward to your visit!” Triple matted and framed with a portrait of Wagner to an overall size of 19.75 x 15. A vertical fold through a single letter of signature, and evidence of mounting remnants matted out along the edges, otherwise fine condition.

This particular correspondence was written during a decisive year for Wagner. In exile in Zurich and in dire financial straits, he was forced to contend with publishers and patrons growing impatient for results from his massive The Ring of the Nibelung project. An invitation to settle in Rio de Janeiro, coinciding with the commencement of an infatuation with poet Mathilde Wesendonck, inspired him to devote all of his creative energy on his interpretation of Tristan and Isolde. In fact, he would not return to work on Nibelung for more than a decade. Quite an upbeat letter from a decidedly dramatic period in Wagner’s career. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
