Imprisoned for murder at the age of 18, Robert Stroud (1890–1963) spent more than 54 years in jail (47 in isolation), where he became a self-educated authority on birds and bird diseases and author of an important reference, Stroud’s Digest of the Diseases of Birds, published in 1942. In part: “That deal is not closed yet, I do not know what it was, but there was something in Stan’s wording of the contract that Marc did not like, but I think that it will all be settled this week, as there is only one point I would make an issue of and I have agreed to that. Once this thing is closed and the picture option taken up, you will be hearing a lot about me, and I am pretty sure that many of our plans will work, and that everyone will make money.” Stroud’s full signature appears again in the return address area of the letter.
