Description

Randy Turpin

Troubled British boxer (1928-1966) who took the middleweight title from Sugar Ray Robinson in 1951 (then lost it two months later in a rematch). After a steady decline in his career and finances, Turpin shot his seventeen-month daughter, Carmen, and himself, in 1966. Carmen survived. Ballpoint signature, penned during his two month reign as champion, “Best wishes, yours in sport, Randy Turpin, 1951,” on an off-white 5.5 x 3.25 government postcard, postmarked August 30, 1951. In very good condition, with faint postal cancellations at upper portion, scattered light soiling and adhesive remnants, and light creasing from mounting. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
