Description

Bullet-riddled playing card from the ‘Meanest Man in the West’

Outlaw and gunfighter (1853–1895). One of the most feared gunmen in Texas, when Hardin went to prison in 1878, he claimed to have killed 42 men. He was shot and killed in the Acme saloon while playing dice. An ace of hearts playing card, 2.25 x 3.5, with five bullet holes to the right of center, presumably shot by Hardin, signed along the bottom in black ink, “J. W. Hardin, 8-4-95,” just 15 days before he was shot and killed inside the Acme Saloon. A pencil notation in an unknown hand to bottom of card reads, “5 passes.” Nicely cloth matted by its corners, with one of Hardin’s business cards which reads, “John W. Hardin Esq., Attorney at Law, Office: 200 1/2 El Paso, Wells Fargo Bldg., Practice in all courts,” a full-length portrait of Hardin, and a biographical plaque, and framed to an overall size of 16.5 x 20.5. In fine condition. A unique item with direct association to one of the the West’s most legendary gunfighters. Provenance: Profiles In History. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
