Description

A week before the 1974 rematch with Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali gives his wife a tidy sum

Muhammad Ali Training Camp check, 8 x 3, filled out and signed by Ali, payable to Belinda Ali for $400.00, January 20, 1974. The word “hundred” has been added in blue ballpoint on the payline in another hand to make the amounts of the check jibe (the check is for $400 but Ali wrote out just “Four”). A central vertical fold, small ding to right edge, some scattered light toning, and bank stamp above signature, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from James Spence.

At the time this check was written, the champ, his second wife Belinda, and their entourage were ensconced at Ali’s Pennsylvania training camp preparing for his January 29, 1974 rematch with Joe Frazier. Although Ali-Frazier II is perhaps the least-remembered of the pugilists’ meetings, events leading up to it cemented what became boxing’s greatest rivalry. The Greatest wanted to avenge himself following a crushing defeat at the hands of Smokin’ Joe some three years earlier in the ‘Fight of the Century,’ but needed the bout as a stepping stone to challenge George Foreman, the newest Heavyweight Champion of the World. Ali was successful in his efforts eight days after signing this check, unleashing a flurry of punishing blows to which Frazier was unable to effectively respond. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
