This message, to attendees of a fundraiser, is the original document from which subsequent ‘form letters’ were created. In full: “It is estimated that 1.5 million children—out of a worldwide total of over 18 million people—have been infected with HIV since the AIDS epidemic began. In my work as Patron of the National AIDS Trust I have met individuals whose courage in the face of this tragic illness has been unforgettable, and a true inspiration. If there is one message that people with HIV and AIDS have impressed upon me, it is their desire that this virus must be stopped from affecting anyone else. With no cure or vaccine yet in sight, World AIDS Day is a real opportunity to raise awareness so that HIV infection can be prevented from the outset. We are all reminded of the need to protect ourselves, our friends, and our loved ones. Thank you for coming to this year’s Concert of Hope. By doing so, you have shown your compassion for people living with HIV and AIDS and have helped raise the awareness that we need to defeat this cruel disease.”
In very good condition, with scattered light creasing, two tears at the left and right side (left tear impinges on the text), trimmed edges, show-through from masking tape on the reverse, and a faint block of uniform overall toning. Most of the flaws can be matted out if so desired to create an attractive display. Accompanied by an unsigned photo of Diana and singer George Michael at a World AIDS Day Concert at Wembley Arena.
Diana arranged the Concert of Hope in Cardiff in June 1995 to raise money for Ty Hafan, a hospice that opened in July 1995. Her work with and dedication to victims of AIDS was symbolic of her rebellious streak, as the high-profile Princess of Wales used her celebrity to humanize those afflicted—especially children—and helped change people’s opinions and attitudes towards the disease. Many observers praised her for assisting the National AIDS Trust, a charity not in keeping with the protocol and tradition of the Royal family.
