Description

Seldom-seen "James E. B. Stuart" signature

Fabled Confederate general (1833–1864) best known for his consummate skill in reconnaissance and as a cavalry officer. After leading successful offensive actions during the Northern Virginia Campaign—as well as a “late,” disastrous showing at Gettysburg, which led to a personal rebuke by Lee—Stuart was killed during the Overland Campaign at the age of 31. Early and scarce fuller ink signature, “Lieut. James E. B. Stuart,” on an off-white 4 x 1 slip, clipped from a larger document, and dated 1857. Beautifully cloth matted and framed with a portrait of Stuart and a biographical plaque, to an overall size of 13.25 x 25. In fine condition. An early signature of the future general, in a more full form than usually found. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
