Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of General Grant by E. & H. T. Anthony of New York from a Brady negative, and so stamped on the reverse, boldly signed in black ink on the lower portion of the image and border, “U. S. Grant, General.” There is light show-through from a curious upside down caption at the top for Major General McClellan visible: evidently, during the manufacturing process, Grant’s images were placed on McClellan’s cards for an unknown reason. In fine condition, with a touch of light soiling to lower right corner, and light show-through from covered caption at top.
Mathew Brady produced more than 7,000 pictures, mostly two negatives of each, with the photographer’s own negatives passing in the 1870s to E. & H.T. Anthony, of New York, in default of payment for photographic supplies. There is no small irony that this Grant CDV, proudly attired in his three-star dress uniform, should also bear a bizarre manufacturing error—an identifier of the lieutenant general’s fellow officer, George B. McClellan, whose insubordination caused his removal by Lincoln and led Grant to call him ‘one of the mysteries of the war.’ Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
