Vintage 9.25 x 12.5 George Gershwin Song-Book page, showing a 5.5 x 7.5 image of Gershwin playing the piano, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Gene—With sincere admiration from his old friend, George Gershwin Nov. 3, 1934.” To the left of his signature, Gershwin adds a three bar AMQS from Rhapsody in Blue. He notates the top of the quote, “Andante,” adding the song’s title under the quote. Simply framed (in what appears to be its original period frame) to an overall size of 10 x 13.25. Uniform toning, a bit heavier to edges, a few small spots of foxing, and a touch of light soiling, otherwise fine condition.
Gershwin’s old friend was Broadway producer and longtime ASCAP president Gene Buck, who also worked as the chief writer and assistant to Flo Ziegfeld. Forging a relationship with—and admiration of—Gershwin along the way, the composer chose Rhapsody in Blue, his 1924 work that established his reputation as a serious composer, to adorn this photo. Not surprisingly, Rhapsody in Blue has since become one of the most popular of all American concert works. A grand photo with association and a hand-penned musical quotation of a famous melody.
