Neal (1914–1972) is best remembered for his off-screen exploits, which involved scandal, mayhem and a charge of murder. In 1965, he shot his third wife in the back of the head with a .45-caliber gun, killing her instantly. He was arrested and, although prosecutors sought the death penalty, he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to ten years in prison, of which he served six years. Vintage pearl-finish 8 x 10 double weight MGM publicity photo, signed and inscribed in-person in fountain pen “To Saul – Best always, Tom Neal.” Reverse of photo bears collector’s ink date notation of July 12, 1943, the date the signature was acquired. Promotional information printed on reverse reveals Neal’s next picture is Another Thin Man.
