Description

Monk comes to terms with the haunting melody of 'Ruby, My Dear'

Idiosyncratic pianist, composer, and arranger (1917–1982) who takes a place among the most innovative and influential figures of modern jazz. DS, one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, February 6, 1945. Agreement between Monk and Monogram Music to publish Monk’s song entitled ‘Ruby,’ receiving royalties of three cents per copy for sheet music or orchestrations and “50% of the net amount of all royalties from commercial phonograph records, transcriptions, synchronizing fees, or foreign royalties which are received by the Publisher from the exploitation of the Composition.” Nicely signed on the reverse in fountain pen, and also signed by Walter Fuller. Written next to the typed title of the song, in an unknown hand, is “Manhatan [sic] Moods,” the song’s original title. Punch holes to top edge, scattered small edge tears, and some light wrinkling, otherwise fine condition.

The inspiration behind ‘Ruby’ was one Rubie Richardson, Monk's first love and the best friend of his older sister, Marion. As referenced in this document, the song was originally dubbed ‘Manhattan Moods,’ with the composer later changing the name to honor his old flame—and because he felt his new title worked better with the music. Regardless, the tune is seen by many as Monk's most romantic piece, first recorded in 1947, and redone in 1950 as a feature for an early mentor, saxophonist Coleman Hawkins. The classic recording of the ballad, however, was made by John Coltrane in 1957. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RRAuction COA.
