Description

Bank check from the great polar explorer

Shackleton (1874–1922), a junior officer in Scott's National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–02, nearly reached the South Pole during an expedition of his own in 1909, in the process becoming a national hero. In 1915, during another expedition, his ship, Endurance, was crushed in the polar ice, and he and five others made a perilous journey of 1300 miles to bring relief for the crew. Knighted in 1909, Shackleton died at South Georgia during a fourth expedition in 1922. Bank check, 8 x 3.25, filled out in another hand and signed by Shackleton, "E. H. Shackleton," payable to Cash for £10.00, November 30, 1911. Check also bears an embossed one penny revenue stamp, initialed underneath by Shackleton, "E.H.S." In very good condition, with red ink cancellations through signature, bank stamps through first two initials, and stamps to body. Just six months after cashing this check, as he prepared for a return attempt at the Pole, he would learn that the Pole had been conquered by Roald Amundsen. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
