Description

The Massachusetts Founding Father appoints a militia lieutenant

American statesman (1722–1803) and signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts who was one of the organizers of the Boston Tea Party and one of his state's most ardent supporters of the patriotic cause. Partly-printed DS, one page, 15.5 x 13, July 28, 1794. Governor Adams appoints James Warner a "Lieutenant of a Company in the first Regiment of the first Brigade, Fourth Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth comprehending the county of Hampshire." Signed in the large left border under the seal, "Samuel Adams," and countersigned by Secretary John Avery. Intersecting storage folds, some light creasing, and mirroring of text to left side of document from folding, otherwise fine condition. The large paper seal is intact.

Adams, one of the Founding Fathers who was called 'the greatest incendiary in the Empire' by British Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson, would himself become a Massachusetts governor. Adams was serving in that very capacity when he signed this appointment for Lieutenant Warner. Among his chief concerns while in office was delineating the division of powers between federal and state government. After being elected governor four times, the great patriot was nearing the end of his political tenure in 1794, retiring three years later spending the rest of his life in Boston. A remarkably clean and desirable piece of Commonwealth history from a leader of the movement that became the American Revolution. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
