Three related items: TLS, one page, 6.25 x 9.25, April 16, 1968. Letter to Howard Sears, town clerk of Barnstable, Massachusetts, regarding her eligibility to vote. In full: "This is to inform you that I would like to be listed with the police and registered in Hyannis Port for the entire year of 1968 as well as each year in the future. I am sorry if I failed to write you earlier but I was only recently informed that I should draw this fact to your attention. In this way, I understand that I shall be able to vote in Hyannis Port"; DS, signed "Jacqueline Kennedy," one page, 8.5 x 13.75, no date. Commonwealth of Massachusetts "Application for an Absent Voter Ballot" signed by Kennedy who has added her New York City mailing address; and a Massachusetts State Election Ballot envelope, 5.5 x 7.5, dated October 31, 1968, filled out and signed by Kennedy while in Greece. In overall fine condition with creasing to the envelope and ballot application and a tear to the left side of the application. Accompanied by two original mailing envelopes.
This archive dates to the tumultuous year of 1968-one that included the June assassination of Jackie's brother-in-law, presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. and subsequent race riots across the nation, widespread demonstrations against the Vietnam War, and violent confrontations between police and anti-war protesters at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. At the time she sent her initial letter to Sears, RFK was a front-running presidential candidate of the Democratic Party. His assassination led the former first lady to fear for her life and that of her children, saying 'If they're killing Kennedys, then my children are targets...I want to get out of this country.' She fled to Greece, from which the ballot was sent. On October 20, 1968 she married Aristotle Onassis, a wealthy, Greek shipping magnate, who was able to provide the privacy and security she needed.
