Description

Judy Garland promotes a 1938 film as she prepares for her most famous role-Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz

Crystal clear vintage pearl-finish 8 x 10 Willinger MGM publicity close-up photo of young Garland looking skyward, signed and inscribed in blue ink "To Beverly, Sincerely, Judy Garland." Printed caption on reverse reads: "Youthful Judy Garland, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's swinging songster, who has just finished her most important role to date in 'Everybody Sing.' She was formerly heard and seen in 'Broadway Melody of 1938' and 'Thoroughbreds Don't Cry." In very good to fine condition, with the writing somewhat light, moderate contrast to last few letters of signature, creasing to left side, with several creases to facial area, and light silvering to darker portions of image.

Following her appearance in Everybody Sing, the studio sent their lovely young star on a two-month to promote the film...and of course to promote her, as well. To be sure, Garland's truly "most important role to date" was still on the horizon when she signed this offered pose, with MGM-which had only recently acquired the film rights-announcing in February 1938 that it had secured Garland to star as 'Dorothy' in the L. Frank Baum classic, The Wizard of Oz. An uncommon pose of the angelically youthful Garland a mere year prior to the breakout role that would cement her place in film history. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
