Declaration of Independence: Elbridge Gerry

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744–1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as 'gerrymandering.' Partly-printed DS, signed "E. Gerry," one page, 15 x 9.5, May 4, 1811. Governor Gerry signs an appointment of Alpheus Ware "to be a Captain of a Company in the Regiment of the Cavalry in the First Brigade, and Third Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth." Framed to an overall size of 19.25 x 14. Intersecting folds, scattered light toning and creasing, and show-through from writing on reverse, otherwise fine condition. The paper seal is worn, but intact. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
