Description

As a young America finds its footing, Hancock authorizes a scarce 1782 payment

Partly-printed DS, one page, 6.25 x 8, May 28, 1782. Document reads, "You are, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Council, ordered and directed to pay unto David Morey the sum of Six Pounds, Sixteen Shillings, in full of his Account for Writing in the Secretary's Office from 10th to 28 May inclusive for which shall be your Warrant." Signed by Hancock as governor and countersigned by John Avery. Fragile intersecting folds, scattered toning and soiling, light edge wear and chipping, an ink blot over Avery's first name, and slight show-through from docketing on reverse, otherwise very good condition.

Hancock was elected governor of Massachusetts in 1780, and among his many duties in overseeing a fledgling commonwealth was approving pay orders, such as the one offered here. This particular document is a rare and unusual format, bearing a remarkably bold example of Hancock's recognizable script. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
